The 12 Life Categories (And How To Optimize Yours)

Summary:

Earl Nightingale once said that ‘people with goals succeed because they know where they are going’. And we agree. In this article, we’ll be breaking down the 12 Official Life Categories with help from Jon and Missy Butcher so you can live your best life.

The Life Categories: What 99% Of People Will Never Work On

There are so many talented, creative, smart, and capable people that never quite reach their potential.

We all know someone who grew old, having never achieved fulfillment in an area of their life that fundamentally mattered the most to them. According to recent studies, one of the biggest regrets of those who find themselves at the end of their lives is that they didn’t follow their dreams.

And that makes sense because most of us will never take the time to figure out what they actually are.

Many of us are so scared to take a step forward into our ideal life because of the inherent fear of failing. So we stay in our comfort zones and allow life to live us. We stay the same and avoid transformation. We become pieces of driftwood in the ocean, constantly knocked around by the tide, hoping for the best.

But what if you could graduate from being a piece of driftwood to becoming a glorious ship? What if you were given the opportunity to look at your ideal life from all angles, all 12 of them, and make a foolproof plan of how to achieve your goals for each of them?

Lifebook founders Jon and Missy Butcher believe wholeheartedly that nobody should have to compromise on any of their dreams, and that optimizing all 12 life categories isn’t just a luxury, it’s your destiny.

Get ready to take the wheel and start steering towards your best life.

The 12 Life Categories (In Order Of Priority)

So without further ado, here are the 12 Official Life Categories you can start concentrating on today. They’re in order of priority, but that doesn’t mean you should just concentrate on the first few. Lifebook Founders and living legends Jon and Missy Butcher say that in order to create the authentically ideal life you desire, all 12 areas must be optimized.

1. Health And Fitness

Just as Virgil once said, “health is the first wealth”. And this couldn’t be more true.

It goes without saying that your physical wellbeing must come first. So make sure you’re breathing deep, eating well, staying hydrated, exercising and having regular health check-ups to make sure your body is at its optimal level of wellbeing.

2. Intellectual Life

Everything you are and where you find yourself today is thanks to your thoughts and beliefs. Your mind creates your reality, which is why your intellectual life is of such importance.

With an extraordinary mind, one that learns and adapts and works for you (not against you), you’re unstoppable. Not only will a brilliant mind serve you as an individual, but it will also serve the world. So, begin that meditation ritual, practice mindfulness, learn new skills and make sure to take care of your brain health.

As the Buddha once said, ‘the mind is everything.’ So treat it that way.

3. Emotional Life

what are the universal emotions

Living a good life, contrary to popular belief, isn’t so much about what you do with it. Rather, a life well-lived is more about how you feel as you’re living it.

We think, then those thoughts forge our emotions. We feel those emotions, and they drive our decisions–the good, the bad, and the ugly. So no matter where we end up in life, having emotional agility and a positive mindset is the real key to success.

So forge a blissipline practice. Laugh more. Spend time with those who pull the magic out of you, not the madness. Keep a gratitude journal. See the glass half full. Do things that make you happy

And remember what Abraham Lincoln wisely said:

“Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”

4. Character

We are all born as originals. Why is it that so many of us die as copies?

– Edward Young, English poet

What is your true character? Are there any parts of you that you’re suppressing or are afraid to step into? Are you afraid to shine your light too brightly, or that you may be rejected if you were to step into your authentic self?

Sit and journal about all the character traits that make up who you are, and who you’d love to be. Mary Ann Evans, known by her pen name George Eliot, said it best when she wrote– It is never too late to be what you might have been.

5. Spirituality

Your own sense of spirituality is what gives life meaning and depth. Reflecting on your relationship to the essence of life is the foundation for a fulfilling existence, and without it, fear may take over.

If you’re new to spirituality and don’t have any prior beliefs, don’t fret. Put the feelers out and explore which ideologies work for you. Perhaps you could begin with some meditation, yoga and light reading about spirituality. As Lao Tzsu said:

“There is one power in the Universe. It doesn’t matter what you call it. You can’t get wet by the word ‘water’. You must get in.”

6. Love Relationship

Although many go through their early years with rocky romantic lives as a backdrop, there is so much to be enjoyed and learned from connecting intimately with others.

As American singer-songwriter Natalie Cole said, “the greatest thing you’ll ever learn is to love and be loved in return.”

Dive deep into love with a fearless heart and say those three little words often. Forge your ideal relationship with your partner. And if you’re single, dive deep into that same level of intimacy with yourself.

7. Parenting

happy children

While we try to teach our children about life, our children end up teaching us what life is all about.

– John Updike

Nobody can deny it. Children are magical, miraculous little humans who bring fun and meaning to the mundane. And doing our bit to raise children to be good people is some of the most valuable work we can ever do.

So whether you’re a mum, dad, auntie, uncle, cousin, teacher or friend to a little human, make it your utmost priority to connect with them. Play games with them. Talk to them. Listen to them. Be kind to them in the toughest times. The little ones in your life may well hold the key to the deepest levels of happiness possible.

8. Social Life

When you boil it down, we human beings are social animals. So it goes without saying that it’s near-on impossible to live a truly fulfilling life without a healthy social circle.

Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.

– Elizabet Jane Howard

So spend quality time with those you love. And if your social life is looking a bit threadbare, pick up the phone and reconnect with your tribe. If you don’t have one, get yourself out there and make one. Remember, the only way to have good friends is to be one yourself.

9. Financial Life

Money can’t buy love or a sense of lasting fulfillment. That said, it sure can help.

A large income is the best recipe for happiness I’ve ever heard of.

– Jane Austen

Having your finances in order is one of the first steps any of us would need to take to restore balance to the chaos that is modern life. After all, we live in a world where gaining and spending money is a necessity (unless you choose to drop off the grid entirely). And while it may be hard to heal your money wounds and strike the balance between saving and spending, the journey is worth it.

10. Career

A famous Hindu proverb states that you should “help your brother’s boat across, and your own will reach the shore.” So forging a career that serves others (and resonates with your values) may well be your missing piece to an authentically successful life.

We all want to feel like we’re valuable members of a community. So make yourself irreplaceable and solidify your expertise in the field of your choice. If you’re yet to find your career path, sit down and ask yourself what you really wish to contribute to humanity…and go for it.

Who doesn’t want to reflect back on our lives and feel good about its quality? Your quality of life–the way you eat, the way you take care of yourself, the way you explore the world, the way you love, the way you spend time with your tribe, the way you contribute to humanity, all of it–is the fruit of your labor. It’s the outcome of how much effort you put into the previous 10 life categories.

So what can you do today to symbolize your high quality of life?
