What is your higher self? And are you supposed to be a spiritual superhero to be able to connect with your divine energy?
It can be tricky to connect with your higher self, especially if you are an overthinker. But even if you are, it’s possible!
And when you’re able to do so, the life-changing rewards are innumerable and invaluable.
What is your higher self?
Your higher self is so much more than the physical form you know so well. It’s the you in the form of the soul consciousness—unlimited and eternal.
It’s the part of you that excites with inspiration, guides with intuition, and teaches through insight.
Your intentions, desires, and secrets are well-known to your higher self. But chances are, you’ve probably had a very limited conversation with it.
Those incredibly useful flashes of intuition and inspiration can become a much more significant part of your life if you allow this communication to flourish.
Here’s the catch, though: connecting with your higher self is a paradox—you are always connected. It’s more than a connection. It’s unity.
The physical you can’t be separated from your energetic consciousness. But because we are here in this physical state, there’s a part of us that feels a sense of separation from everything else, including your higher self.
In reality, there is no separation. So, where does the energy of you begin and end?
Benefits of connecting with higher self
First, there are some basics to understand. According to Jeffrey Allen, a spiritual healer and trainer of Mindvalley’s Duality Quest,…
- Your physical self is your current life human personality
- Your higher self is your multi-life spirit personality
This identity gives you a higher perspective and an ability to connect directly with your spirit guides to support you on your journey.
“When you live from your physical self, you are easily swayed by the physical world because you don’t have much internal strength,” Jeffrey explains.
On the contrary, connecting with your higher self has a plethora of benefits:
- Your life is meaningful no matter what’s happening in your life
- You have a greater purpose, and your life events have a purpose
- You perceive suffering as your opportunity to learn and grow
- You are empowered, and you’re co-creating with life
- Your life feels magical
- You feel supported and connected
5 ways to connect with your higher self
There are several ways to connect with your higher self. Some ways are simple and easy, and others require some training.
1. Lucid dreaming
First and foremost, your higher self speaks with you in your dream state—the realm of your subconscious.
That’s the state when all the mental constructs strip away and seize to control your reality. It’s the stage of sleep known as REM (rapid eye movement) when the activity of the brain’s neurons is as active as during waking hours, with the only difference being that your body is completely relaxed.
Most of the vividly recalled dreams occur during REM sleep, and this is the moment when you tap into your higher consciousness.
It’s crucial for everyone who wants to expand one’s consciousness to start remembering their dreams and journal them.
According to Charlie Morley, bestselling author and teacher of Mindvalley’s Lucid Dreaming Quest, there are universal archetypes:
- A Wiseman represents guidance and wisdom.
- A Mother represents nurturing and comfort.
- A Higher self represents unification.
You can intentionally call in any archetype within the lucid dream and ask your questions.
Once you become consistent in remembering your dreams, you can master lucid dreaming and consciously connect with your higher self in lucid dreams.
2. Higher self-meditation
Higher self-meditation is one of the most powerful ways to consciously connect with your higher self.
Your higher consciousness isn’t’ separate from you. It’s always present and characterized by high vibrational frequency.
When you experience love and profound gratitude, when you truly forgive, that’s when you live from your higher self-consciousness.
So, the meditation is designed to help you connect with your higher self and then integrate it into your daily awareness.
You are more than you think you are. You are more than your physical body bound in time and space. You have knowingness beyond your beliefs. — @iamjeffreyallen Share on XJeffrey explains that when there’s less distance between your physical identity and your spiritual identity, your spiritual experiences no longer appear strange or crazy. And it comes with the practice of who you are beyond your physical identity.
“It doesn’t mean you have to do things differently. It’s about being conscious and being yourself in any situation,” he adds.
You can use guided meditations to help you meet with your higher self.
Once you feel the presence of your higher self, you can ask questions about anything. The higher self does not judge or criticize.
Be open to the answers you receive, no matter the form.
Don’t forget that your answers may come in various delivery methods: words, feelings, images, or sensations. Be open to whatever arises.
Journal everything that comes online, as things might become clear after a while in your waking state as synchronicities or in your dreams.
3. Astral projection
Astral projection, also known as an out-of-body experience (OBE), is another way of connecting with your higher self.
Since your higher self is your energetic consciousness, the first step is to transcend your identity with your physical body.
In other words, when you realize you aren’t your physical body, you can comprehend the idea of the higher self, and astral projection does just that.
On top of that, according to Jade Shaw, an astral projection expert and the trainer of Mindvalley’s The Art of Astral Projection Quest, astral projection is one of the most visceral experiences of awe a human being can have.
She says, “During an OBE, you realize you aren’t your physical body. It can be referred to as the outer-view effect that gives you perceptual vastness and reframes your self-perception, reality, and your place within it.”
Just like with lucid dreaming, you can set an intention to consciously connect with your higher self during your intentional astral projection.
Practicing hypnagogic mindfulness meditation is your first step to learning astral projection.
4. Journaling or intuitive writing
You can ask questions and write or type your first, immediate gut-reaction answers. Then go back and re-read them with an awareness of your physical and emotional response.
You’ll see if your answer came from the ego or the higher self.
Journaling also helps make sense of messages you don’t “get” right away.
If the answers seem wiser than usual, it’s the higher self. If the answers seem forced or if they sound like you are telling other people what they want to hear, they’re from the ego.
5. Imagination
People often dismiss imagination but it’s the key to your ability to create, so you can create a situation where you connect with your higher self.
Allyn Evans, certified Reiki Master teacher and residential trainer for the Monroe Institute, explains that even though it feels like we make things up, imagination is coming from us.
There are two parts to the imagination—active and passive. In the active part, you actively imagine connecting with your higher self in the parallel reality, and then you remain open to receiving whatever comes.
You can imagine your higher self as a physical presence like your best friend sitting beside you. Or you can imagine yourself surrounded by warm, loving energy. Go with whatever images are right for you!
“Imagination communicates not only with pictures but also with feelings, sensations, and emotions. So be open to how you receive information,” she adds.
How to talk to your higher self?
Many of us believe in only what we perceive with our physical senses. As a result, we tend to ignore this hugely important aspect of ourselves—the energetic.
Think of it as intuition that can perceive energy without physical limitations. So talking to your higher self is like tuning into your intuition by asking your questions and listening to what it has to say.
It does require deep listening, trust, and patience because answers come when the right time comes.
Like with intuition, it’s not about your sensitivity but your internal noise.
Imagine talking with a friend in a noisy environment. You cannot hear them. So you can’t talk to your higher self if you have internal noise, nor can you hear what your higher self has to say.
So the first thing to do is to lessen or stop your overthinking and cultivate deep listening.
You can talk to your higher self using the same methods of connecting with it. Once the connection is established, you can have your conversation.
Be aware that the messages you might be receiving from your higher self can be often garbled, cryptic, and baffling, especially if they come to you in dreams.
It helps to journal these cryptic and symbolic messages because sometimes the answers become clear when you write about them.
Sometimes you can hear voices; other times, you’ll receive images or intense urges to do or not do something.
One ability you’ll develop as you become used to hearing your higher self is the ability to discern between the fear-based voice of the ego and the infinite/eternal voice of your higher self.
You can develop a keen awareness of your body as a great “translator” of your higher self’s messages.
Awaken your higher self
Your life will take on a whole new meaning – and possibly a whole new direction as your higher self points you toward your highest alignment.
You are just a few skills away from that new direction. If you want to enhance your intuition to be able not only to connect with your higher self but to live your everyday life from your higher consciousness, Mindvalley is the place to be.
