The old identity blocking everything you’re manifesting

A spiritual woman reflecting on her old identity blocks standing in the way to manifesting better

The world is rewriting the rules faster than human beings can update their internal definition of who they are.

Identities that people have leaned on their entire adult lives are quietly losing their hold on reality.

And here’s what’s making it harder: most of the manifestation work that worked five years ago isn’t working anymore.

If you are visualizing. Affirming. Journaling. Doing all the practices. But the breakthroughs are not landing

And this is not because you lack effort, but because you’re trying to manifest a new life into this new world with an old, outdated self-identity.

To explain this better than anything else, let me tell you something that happened to me in 2015.

The year I found out I was sabotaging my own money

We had just wrapped A-Fest in Dubrovnik, Croatia.

Hundreds of attendees were heading home, and I walked into the restaurant overlooking the Adriatic Sea and saw Marisa Peer, the British hypnotherapist, one of the most powerful transformers of human belief systems I have ever met, having breakfast with her husband.

I had never been hypnotized in my life. I asked her if she’d be willing to do a session with me.

Here’s what I wanted to understand. By every external measure, Mindvalley was doing well. We were growing. The events were thriving. A-Fest itself was generating several hundred thousand dollars of profit per year. But for some reason that I could not explain, I was not making money. The company was growing, and I was personally broke.

Every cent of A-Fest profit, I was giving to charity. I felt guilty keeping it. I felt like the money should go somewhere “better” than me. And it took me years to understand why.

Marisa guided me into a regression. Slowly, gently, she walked me back through memory after memory. I was barely awake, somewhere in that state between sleep and consciousness.

And suddenly, I was thirteen years old again, sitting in a classroom in Malaysia, looking at a man I’ll call Mr. John.

Mr. John was my English Literature teacher. He was brilliant. He was kind. He was the kind of teacher who shapes the entire trajectory of a young person’s relationship with ideas. The whole class adored him.

But all of us also knew, in the quiet way children know things, that he was suffering. His wife had left him. He lived in a small apartment. He didn’t have much money. And we loved him so much that we used to talk about it among ourselves — isn’t it a shame that someone this wonderful has to live like that.

Marisa asked me: “Can you see a thought pattern that you may have developed from this moment?”

And the moment she asked it, I saw it clearly for the first time in twenty years.

I had internalized a Brule — a bullshit rule — that went like this: To be a great teacher, you have to suffer.

I had unconsciously linked the role of “teacher” with “must be poor to be authentic.” And by the time I was forty years old, building a global education company, that thirteen-year-old’s conclusion was running quietly in the background of every financial decision I made.

I wasn’t manifesting money. I was manifesting exactly what my identity allowed. A successful teacher who didn’t get to be wealthy.

What this actually was

What I just described to you has a name.

It’s called the Upper Limit block — and it’s one of the 10 manifesting blocks we’re going to cover at the Manifesting Summit this weekend.

The Upper Limit is the ceiling your upbringing and your culture quietly installs in you on how much you’re allowed to receive. How much love. How much money. How much success. How much joy. Most of us don’t even know it’s there. We just keep bumping into the same invisible wall and assuming it’s the world.

In my case, the ceiling was the story that teachers had to suffer.

In your case, it’s something else. Something just as specific. Something just as old.

And it’s only one of ten.

When Marisa helped me clear that pattern, and it was clearing, not affirming, that did the work, my relationship with wealth shifted in a way I still find hard to describe.

It wasn’t a strategy change. It wasn’t a new habit.

It was an identity that had been quietly running my life, suddenly being seen, and then released.

Why this world demands a new self

The pace at which the world is changing is forcing a question on millions of people right now that most of them are trying to avoid.

If the version of me I spent twenty years building is no longer relevant — who am I going to be next?

That question terrifies people. So they don’t ask about it directly.

Instead, they bury it under productivity hacks, doomscrolling, side hustles, AI courses, vague spiritual practices that don’t go deep enough.

But the question doesn’t go away. It just gets louder.

Here’s what I want you to understand: in this exact moment, that question is not your enemy. It’s your invitation.

The people who will thrive in the next eighteen months are not the ones with the best AI skills or the most followers or the most aggressive growth strategy.

They are the ones who can consciously rewire their identity, who they are at the level of nervous system, belief, and self-concept, faster than the world is rewriting the rules around them.

This is the only durable advantage that exists right now.

And it’s available to anyone willing to do the work.

What identity rewiring actually looks like

I want to give you something useful before this letter ends.

The actual structure of how this work is done.

Because once you see it, you start to recognize where you are in your own version of it.

Identity rewiring is not a single decision. It’s a sequence. Three phases. In order. And the order is not optional.

First, you have to clear.

The old identity doesn’t dissolve because you’ve decided to upgrade. It has to be released, actively, deliberately. The generational money patterns. The inherited worthiness wiring. The thirteen-year-old’s conclusion about what someone like you is allowed to have.

These are not mindset problems. They’re encoded in the nervous system, often before age ten, and no affirmation can reach them. They have to be excavated and dissolved.

For most people, this layer is invisible. They don’t know it’s there. They feel “stuck” without being able to name what’s stopping them.

The clearing is the part of manifesting almost no one teaches, and it’s the most important part. It’s what David Ghiyam teaches when he works with generational money ceilings. It’s what Regan Hillyer does in her work on epigenetic patterns, the science of how your biology changes in response to inherited belief, and how those patterns can be released.

Then, you have to align.

The new identity has to be written into the body, not just the mind. This is where most spiritual work falls short.

People understand the concepts intellectually but their nervous system hasn’t caught up. The wiring around money, love, worthiness, receiving — all of it lives in your cells, not your thoughts.

This is what Paul McKenna’s hypnotic work is for. The conscious mind can want abundance for years; the subconscious quietly says not safe. The alignment phase is where those two finally come into agreement.

Finally, you have to receive it.

Your system has to learn what it actually feels like to hold what you’ve been asking for. Not as a concept. As a felt state. Because if your nervous system doesn’t know how to hold the new reality, it will push it away the moment it arrives.

The receiving phase is where intuition opens, the part of you, as Steve Jobs put it at Stanford, that already knows what you want to become.

It’s where surrender finally makes sense. It’s where the new identity stops being a hope and becomes a body.

Clear. Align. Receive.

This sequence is the entire architecture of how a human being becomes someone new.

And it’s exactly what we built the Manifesting Summit around.

The most transformational manifesting event of the year starts this weekend

If anything in this letter has felt alive in you while you’ve been reading, I would love for you to come and do this work with us.

One last thing

I want to leave you with this.

Twenty years ago, when the world was about to enter the internet age, there was a similar moment of identity collapse. Industries reorganized. Careers disappeared. Whole categories of expertise became obsolete in the space of a few years.

The people who came through that transition with their lives transformed were not the smartest people in the room. They were not the most credentialed.

They were the ones who let the old version of themselves go — willingly — and let a new one form.

We are in another one of those moments now.

The version of you that you’re being asked to release is not the enemy.

It got you here. Honor it. Thank it.

And then — when you’re ready — let it go.

Something is trying to come through.

I’d love to help you meet it.

With love,
Vishen

  1. This article was very much a poke in the gut as I have been avoiding a decision. And that avoidance can be chalked up to patterns I’ve learned much earlier in my life.
I need to go through this process, yet regretfully, I am unable to attend this weekend.
I will be reading and re-reading articles here to start the process though.

  2. I am open and ready for change and letting go of old, handed-down concepts about money, my worth, etc. I have been asking questions such as “what is blocking me” “how can I identify it”, but the answers don’t come to me, or better, I have not been able to see them. I am a very enthusiastic, never tired, energetic, stress-free and positive person. I just need “to see the light”.

  3. This resonated deeply with me…
“The people who will thrive in the next eighteen months are not the ones with the best AI skills or the most followers or the most aggressive growth strategy.
They are the ones who can consciously rewire their identity, who they are at the level of nervous system, belief, and self-concept, faster than the world is rewriting the rules around them.”
It is the affirmation I needed to step into the life I know I am meant to live now. Thank you, and looking forward to the manifesting summit.

  4. Very timely, was thinking about this topic this morning. Love remodeling my perception of the new me.

  5. This makes so much sense! I’ve known about the upper limit for quite some time, but I’ve never gone through the process of identifying it, releasing it and receiving what is meant for me. I am so ready to do this, and I am so grateful to be attending the Manifestation Summit!

  6. “The version of you that you’re being asked to release is not the enemy.

It got you here. Honour it. Thank it.

And then, when you’re ready, let it go.”

    Vishen,
That landed like a 20 megaton truth bomb.
I have not been honoring what brought me to this place in my life, right where I need to be for the next greatest version of me to emerge.

I did not expect a few lines from an email from you to make the tears flow freely (and quite wildly), no doubt in my mind that with that emotional release, this identity is being released as well, with love and gratitude;not fear and resentment.

Thank you. And see you Friday!
    -Daniel

  7. Wayne Dyer said a long time ago:
sometimes you have to die while you are alive. This did help me a lot to let parts of my old self go. And it‘s still working for me..

All the best and lots of love to everyone

  8. Vishen, thanks for doing what you do!

There is definitely something specific and old that keeps blocking me from becoming the ass-kicking version of myself that I can envision but can’t seem to create.

Thanksgiving of 2017 I had to cancel a mission trip to help Hurricane Maria victims in Puerto Rico because my 3 yr old son was in the hospital. While stuck in airports and a hospital room, I downloaded The Code of the Extraordinary Mind on my Kindle and I was hooked. I had been questioning bullshit rules my whole life and always felt there was a better way to operate in the world. I got excited about the ideas but that’s about as far as it got.

Fast forward to 2025, and while trying to work through one of the most challenging seasons of my life, I came across an original audiobook of Mind Control by Jose Silva which led me to MindValley and ultimately to this moment.

The part of this blog that hit the hardest for me was this:
“The people who will thrive in the next eighteen months …are the ones who can consciously rewire their identity, who they are at the level of nervous system, belief, and self-concept”.

This aligns exactly with the vision of who I want to be and how I want to help people, but I’m afraid I’ll miss out on something amazing because of something I can’t see or quite fully understand.

I look forward to hearing you live and sense that the breakthrough I’ve been searching for will finally arrive.

  9. Dear Vishen,

Thank you for your email on ‘old identity blocking everything you’re manifesting’.

I was surprised to see the topic of your email as i had just finished listening to David Ghiyam’s podcast on ‘what’s blocking your miracles’.

A few things from your letter here landed hard on me and these include:

    1) Generational money patterns – taken from my parents and perhaps from ancestral lineage – that ‘money is hard to earn’, ‘money doesnt grow on trees’, and ‘do you think you are rich to spend this amount’. I was in my teens just like you and have had to hear my old folks and their limiting beliefs about money.

    2) the inherited worthiness – i founded my own public relations (PR) & Communications company and still find it hard to own the title Founder and CEO. I ask myself if this is because i feel unworthy of it or is this due to the non-attachment practice that i have.

    3) the need to persevere and work hard to gain recognition to get my art pieces into an exhibition. After listening to some of David Ghiyam’s podcast i now know it’s bullshit. The question is why didn’t my art pieces get selected recently. How did i sabotage this or whether this was due to evil eyes? I was told by an astrologer to keep silent about projects that i am working on or else i lose the luck instantly.

    4) Upper Limit – i have put a cap on how much i can earn as a CEO and as an artist. And i ask myself why after seeing your email here. My passion for art is a hobby and gift i had since childhood which got lost after i started working at the age of 20. As i grow older i realize my creativity has gotten stronger and there is a need to express more and more as an intuitive artist. I want to be seen, to be heard and to be loved by the right people.

So yes, this email of yours calls out to me in many ways. And i feel that it has come at a timely manner as i have been given a 2nd chance to fulfil my highest potential since my spiritual awakening in 2020. There is another voice in me that says i should get on to designing my own clothing line. Still, is this just fantasy or illusion or a dream of girl who once loved to draw?

Ever so grateful for your teachings and wisdom. By the way, thank you for the lofty questions. Have been using it during my meditation practices.

    Blessings always,

    Devi

  10. After 25 years of working a well paying job that I knew was never the perfect fit for me, the universe has forced me to make a change, clearly knowing I wasn’t able to leave it on my own. I need a reinvention. Falling back in the same line of work will lead to stability but not happiness. After childhood abandonment and neglect, risk taking is exceptionally difficult for me. I have never posted anything online in my life. Your email and seeing others with similar struggles on this blog moved me to take action. I am setting my intentions to Clear, Align and Receive. Thank you for the insight and encouragement. Also, thank you for making free versions of workshops possible!

  11. This line made me cry “Because if your nervous system doesn’t know how to hold the new reality, it will push it away the moment it arrives” because I pushed away promotion and love due to this, my life feels like it’s stuck in the same place and I just cannot move forward. Something is blocking me.

  12. My husband died recently and I have been lost. Your sentence, ‘something is trying to get through to me,’ was perfect for me. I do need to CLEAR some things out of my mind and body. Thank you Vishen. I’m hopeful for the entire weekend!!

  13. It is the reality I found myself, sometimes blaming myself, the system, my background, but not realising the repeatative behaviour, act and approach to life, putting some much pressure on myself, rolling around “upper limit block. Failing trapped of identify rewiring act. But with this piece of manifestation. I have confidence I’m already clearing, ensuring my nervous system feel and accept the new reality. Creating alignment phase and eventually get to receiving phase.

Thank you so much for this insightful manifestation? I really appreciate

  14. Dear Vishen, This message really resonated with me. I especially connected with the idea that we may be trying to manifest a new life while still operating from an old identity.

Right now, I feel I am experiencing blocks across different areas of my life — my career/job path, friendships, and money. At 53, I am finding the job market more difficult to navigate, and it is bringing up deeper questions around relevance, visibility, worthiness, security, and how to step into the next version of myself with confidence.

I have always been in a corporate job, and that identity has been a significant part of who I have been for many years. With the job market becoming increasingly tough and uncertain, I sometimes find myself wondering what comes next — whether I need to continue looking for the right corporate role, reinvent myself within the same space, or open myself to a completely different path.

The challenge is that I cannot see that new path clearly right now, and I do not know what to do next. My financial security is also deeply connected to this, which makes the uncertainty feel even heavier.

I am taking action and trying to move forward, but I also sense that something deeper may be coming in the way.

What I would really like to understand is: what is the identity, belief, or old pattern that I may still be carrying? Is it around worthiness, receiving, rejection, visibility, money, age, security, or fear of becoming someone new?

Your Clear, Align, Receive framework felt very powerful. I feel I may be at the “clear” stage — trying to understand what old story needs to be released so that the next version of me can emerge. 15. Dear Vishen, yes, your words really resonate
As they so often do. Those early childhood imprints that are so hard to access. What a revelation—“To be a good teacher, you have to suffer.” Bam, that hits home. Yes, I feel “stuck” too, and I’m sure many others do as well. Thank you for your tireless dedication to helping people find liberation. It’s amazing. I love Mindvalley.

  16. This is the part that resonated most for me; “The version of you that you’re being asked to release is not the enemy. It got you here. Honour it. Thank it. And then, when you’re ready, let it go. Something is trying to come through.”
I had a vision in the moment I read it of ancestors past who got me to where I am now and future generations who need me to upgrade in order for them to be where they need to be.

    1. “…and future generations who need me to upgrade in order for them to be where they need to be.” THANK YOU. I know work of a new shift started recently and it ties to my first granddaughter, born a few months ago. Your line here put it into focus!

  17. This hit hard. In a good way. Thank you!

I’d love to attend the 3 day summit but I live in Singapore and becomes 11pm-4am for here. Anyway to see a recording? Or will that not be as useful?

    1. Merci pour tout ce que vous nous donner.

      La phrase qui résonne en moi ;
La version de moi même que l’on me demande de m’en libérer, n’est pas mon ennemi,
c’est elle qui m’a permi d’arriver jusque là.
      Remecie la.

  18. Vishen,
Thanks for the inspiring letter! I read the words below… had a good long talk and an immense cry with the old version of myself and thanked her for serving me well for nearly 50 years. We both understood and agreed that in order for me to do what I am called to do with purpose we must part ways and allow for the new version to emerge and reign supreme!

*The version of you that you’re being asked to release is not the enemy.
It got you here. Honour it. Thank it.
And then, when you’re ready, let it go.
Something is trying to come through.

  19. I almost have chills reading this. I don’t believe things happen for no reason…and first thing this morning, this popped up on my phone. And I rarely read my emails. Let alone first thing in the morning. This is exactly the deeper work I’ve been exploring in regard to why I’ve been blocked and having struggles in not only manifesting, but reaching goals in the same areas of my life. Reading this hit something. I wish I could attend the Manifesting Summit. But I had a previous trip planned months ago. Will there be a replay?
