Your Higher Self is the real you, the soul consciousness that is so, so much more than the physical form you know so well.
Your Higher Self is the you that is unlimited and eternal. It’s the part of you that excites you with inspiration, guides you with intuition and teaches you through insight.
Your intentions, desires and your secrets are well-known to your Higher Self.
You know everything about you. But chances are, you’ve probably had a very limited conversation with your Higher Self.
Those incredibly useful flashes of intuition and inspiration can become a much bigger part of your life, if you allow this communication to flourish.
Connecting with your Higher Self is something of a paradox – you are connected, always. In fact, it’s more than a connection. It’s a unity.
The physical you can’t be separated from the energetic consciousness-you. But we are here in this physical state, and part of that includes a feeling of separation from everything else.
In reality there is no separation.
So, where does the energy of you begin and end?

What Is Your Higher Consciousness?
Higher consciousness is a term that is often used to describe an important mental state that is rather hard to reach. It’s a term often used by spiritual gurus, sages and monks, and it’s not always easy to define due to the intrinsic nature of human beings wired around primary instincts.
That’s why higher consciousness is generally defined as “the part of the human mind that is capable of transcending animal instincts”, or lower consciousness.
Indeed, much of our lives are spent in lower consciousness, paying more attention to our external surroundings in order to survive. It’s a byproduct of living in the modern age.
Moreover, we tend to stick to the idea that higher consciousness isn’t a scientific but rather esoteric or religious concept.
At best, it can be perceived as the popular concept of modern spirituality that attempts to demystify the ideas widely developed in the ancient mystical teachings such as Indian Vedas.
Yet, human nature isn’t one-sided at all. Its divine essence is included in the name itself – human being.
Ekhart Tolle, spiritual teacher and best-sellling author, explains:
“You are a human being. These two words not only describe who you are as a member of a particular species but, if examined more deeply, also point to the twofold nature of your identity. Human is who you are on the level of form; that is to say, your body and mind. Those two aspects of your form identity make up your conditioned self. That self is conditioned by genetics and the environment, as well as other factors as yet unknown to science. Being, on the other hand, points to the essence of who you are as timeless, formless, and unconditioned consciousness. Human and being, form and essence, are ultimately not separate, in the same way that a wave or ripple on the surface of the ocean is not separate from the ocean or from any other wave or ripple, although it may appear to be so.”
So How Can You Bring That Divine Essence Into Your Life?
Ken Wilber, an American writer on transpersonal psychology, in his book The Spectrum of Consciousness, uses the lower and higher consciousness as the progression or evolution of human consciousness from personal to higher transpersonal consciousness.
What it means is that when you rise above your own life and self-orientation, looking into service to others, you ignite that divine essence from within and become the higher version of yourself.
Is it possible to access the higher consciousness?
With conscious attention, we can learn to access the higher consciousness, or the spiritual self, with greater frequency, becoming more focused on serving others than service to one self.

Your Higher Self is your best guide for a meaningful experience here on the physical plane.
It’s your innate ability to tap into timelessness and transcend any challenge in life.

According to Ekhart Tolle, if you think that life exists to make you happy, you are in for a big shock. Everyone on this planet will at some point experience challenges. When you inevitably experience something horrible, you have a choice. You can become sad, bitter, angry, and live in a state of unhappiness. Alternatively, you can observe the challenge as it unfolds, from a deeper state of awareness and without judgment.
So your Higher Self is that ability that enables you to remain peacefully still from within in the midst of any turbulent situation.
Also, it’s your best inner guidance that is steering you toward the best course of action. So any time you get an inexplicable feeling or premonition, your Higher Self is trying to communicate with you.
How Does The Higher Self Communicate?
If you’ve been dismissing those hunches and gut feelings, you might want to ask yourself why. Information that comes from the Higher Self is not necessarily picked up with the physical senses, but it’s no less valid!
After all, you can’t physically perceive gravity, but obviously there’s something keeping you from floating away like a birthday balloon.
Many of us are so used to believing in only what we perceive with our physical senses. As a result, we tend to ignore this hugely important aspect of ourselves – the energetic.
Another potential issue you may have with the messages you’re receiving from your Higher Self is that they’re often garbled, cryptic and totally baffling, especially if they come to you in dreams.
It really helps to journal these encryptic and symbolic messages, because sometimes the answers become clear when you write about them.
Sometimes you can hear voices; other times, you’ll receive images or strong urges to do – or not do – something.
One ability you’ll develop as you become used to hearing your Higher Self is the ability to discern between the fear-based voice of the ego and the infinite/eternal voice of your Higher Self.
You can develop a keen awareness of your body as a great “translator” of your higher self’s messages.
Here Are 3 Ways To Connect With Your Higher Self
First and foremost, your Higher Self speaks with you in your dream state – the realm of your subconscious. That’s the state when all the mental constructs strip away and seize to control your reality. It’s the stage of sleep known as REM (Rapid eye movement), when the activity of the brain’s neurons is as active as during waking hours with the only difference that your body is completely relaxed.
Most of the vividly recalled dreams occur during REM sleep, and this is the moment when you tap into your higher consciousness.
It’s crucial to everyone who wants to expand one’s consciousness is to start remembering your dreams and journal them.
Every night your Higher Self connects with you during your dream state to give you clues and shed light on your own blind spots.
It’s your message of the day to pay close attention to discern what you need to let go of at this point.
It’s important to understand that every single character in your dream represents yourself – this or that aspect of your own subconscious that you probably disown.
For example, when you dream about the person who was present in your life at some point, that’s how your Higher Self tells you that there are some events that happened in your life at that time that you haven’t’ learned from. And now you repeat those patterns.
Another example is how your Higher Self draws your attention to fears that you need to release through the nightmare scenarios.
Depending on the symbolism of your dreams, you are either holding on to past traumas and asked to forgive yourself and others, or disown your own shadows that manifest themselves as your persecutors or negatively charged characters in your dreams.
Once you become consistent in remembering your dreams, you can master lucid dreaming and consciously connect with your Higher Self in lucid dreams.
Meditation is one of the most powerful ways to connect with your Higher Self consciously.
Your higher consciousness isn’t’ separate from you. It’s always present. It’s the higher aspect of your consciousness that is characterized by high vibrational frequency.
When you experience love and profound gratitude, when you truly forgive, that’s when you actually live from your Higher Self consciousness.
So the meditation that is designed to help you connect with your higher self aims first of all on raising your vibrational frequency.
You can use guided meditations or meditate yourself by tuning into a profound state of gratitude for your life, and then set an intention to meet with your Higher Self.
Imagine a tranquil, peaceful setting, someplace you love to be in.
Not ‘do’ in. ‘Be’ in.
If you want, you can imagine your Higher Self as a physical presence, like your very best friend sitting beside you. Or you can imagine yourself surrounded by a warm, loving energy.
Go with whatever images are right for you!
Once you feel the presence of your Higher Self, you can ask questions about anything. The Higher Self does not judge or criticize.
Be open to the answers you receive, no matter the form.
Don’t forget that your answers may come in a variety of delivery methods: words, feelings, images, or sensations. Be open to whatever arises.
Journal everything that comes online, as things might become clear after a while in your waking state as synchronicities or in your dreams.
3. Journaling or Intuitive Writing
You can ask questions and write or type your first, immediate gut-reaction answers. Then go back and re-read them with an awareness of your physical and emotional response.
You’ll see right away if your answer came from the ego or the higher self.
Journaling also helps make sense of messages you don’t “get” right away.
If the answers seem wiser than usual, it’s the higher self. If the answers seem forced or if they sound like you telling other people what they want to hear, they’re from the ego.
How Do I Tell The Difference Between The Ego And The Higher Self?
So, how do you tell the difference between a fear-based answer that your ego gives you and the voice of the Higher Self?
How do you know that the answers aren’t just imagination, or something your mind made up to appease you?
If you feel physical sensations of anxiety, tension, fear, or anger, you are talking to the ego.
The ego creates its identity around pain.
That’s what it knows. That’s what it’s comfortable with and that’s the language it understands. It wants to keep identifying with that negativity because then it has an identity.
If you feel physical sensations of lightness, love, energy, happiness, etc., you are talking to the Higher Self.
There is no identity in the Higher Self. It’s just energy, with no beginning and no end. The natural state of the Higher Self is free, loving and joyful.
One method is to ask yes/no questions and then listen for the immediate answer – sometimes even before you finish the question.
This immediate response is probably your Higher Self, bypassing the programming of the mind. If you were to give yourself time to analyze your question, believe me, the ego would start chiming in with its usual negative chatter!
You – that is, the higher you – is your best guide.
Your ultimate teacher.
So make a date with your higher self, and find out what’s going on in your life. Ask the big questions from your “big self.”
Your life will take on a whole new meaning – and possibly a whole new direction as your higher self points you toward what is right for you.
