When searching for methods of self-healing, you might be overwhelmed by the array of techniques, practices, and methods of healing and self-improvement that are available today:
Shamanic healing, reiki healing, energy healing, you name it…
Most of these healing practices focus on the concept of self-control theory: a belief that most criminal practices stem from a lack of self-control from the individual. Most studies have found that there is indeed a correlation between low levels (or a complete lack of) restraint and impulsive and/or destructive and criminal behavior.
However, if you look at the self-control theory from a spiritual perspective, it makes sense — regardless of whether our actions are criminal or not.
Think about all the times you have unnecessarily harmed someone — even just in thought. While it’s something to be thankful for that you at least had some boundaries in place, imagine if you didn’t. Perhaps instead of wishing someone ill, yelling at them, or being rude to them, you might have physically hurt them.
Negative emotions like anger, jealousy, impatience, and vindictiveness are also imposed on us by a lack of self-control.
If we mastered our emotions, we wouldn’t sweat the small stuff. We wouldn’t waste energy adding negativity to the world, because we would realize that by harming others we are also harming ourselves.
Self-mastery is the most important step in emotional and spiritual healing because it is the foundation that which positivity is built. If we can’t control ourselves, we will never improve.
How Can Reiki Healing Teach Self-Control?
Reiki is a practice in which it’s believed that universal energy — or life force — flows through us and can be transferred through our bodies for healing and rejuvenation. While it is typically practiced by a Reiki practitioner channeling energy and using their hands to heal a patient, Reiki healing can be practiced on yourself — if you take the time to learn how to do it correctly.
Reiki is so much more than an energy healing exercise, however. It is used to relax the body and calm the mind. The 5 core principles of Reiki also promote self-mastery.
These principles are:
Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will not be angry.
Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings.
Just for today, I will be kind to my neighbor and every living thing.
Of course, once you understand that life force flows through everything and everyone, you realize that our actions — no matter how small — carry consequences that affect and change the universe.
When we see how our behavior affects the world around us, it inspires us to become better people and focus on self-healing.
Furthermore, with consistent practice, Reiki healing also:
- Improves your breathing, thereby decreasing stress levels and strengthening your lungs and circulation;
- Strengthens your immune system;
- Revitalizes your energy levels, awareness, and concentration;
- Soothes pain and discomfort;
- Can also be used to detox your system of impurities;
- Improves your coordination, motor skills, reflexes, and balance;
- Promotes relaxation and patience for clarity and inner peace.
Not to mention, the more you practice reiki healing, the faster you will heal and the more powerful your energy flow will become.
Reiki could then be considered a potent cross between mindfulness and meditation, meeting the needs of the body, the mind, and the soul.
Before You Begin Reiki Healing
Before you attempt to heal yourself with Reiki, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Energy healing has to be learned.
Reiki is an art that practitioners spend years mastering. While it can absolutely be used for self-healing, it’s always best to have at least one lesson by a practitioner or to train with them so that you learn everything possible and can reap the full benefits of Reiki healing.
Reiki might know you better than you know it
One of the first things you will learn in your Reiki journey is that it heals what needs to be healed — not necessarily what you want to be healed. Thus, don’t be disappointed if you do not get instant or exact results.
More importantly, Reiki does not heal symptoms of pain, it works at the source. For example, if you are suffering from stomach cramps, it will do you a world of good to find out why these cramps are ailing you so that your Reiki treatment can be more effective, and take up less time.
Reiki and medicine go hand in hand
Modern medicine is something we have been blessed with in this day and age. While Reiki is powerful (when practiced properly), there is nothing wrong with supplementing your reiki self healing with a bit of medical treatment. It’s up to you to determine if your condition is serious enough to warrant a visit to the doctor’s office, but just keep in mind, you are not a doctor — if you feel something is very wrong, seek medical attention.
Make yourself comfortable.
There is no one right way to practice Reiki energy healing. However, there are a few tips that will optimize your experience. Practice Reiki at a time of day that best suits you. Wear comfortable clothes. Put relaxing music on if you want to. Make sure you won’t be disturbed.
Reiki Energy Self-Healing
This is a simple treatment that can be done anytime, anywhere, so long as you have the time, space, and quietness for it. You will be in full control of the exercise and can decide for yourself if the practice will take five minutes or one hour— it’s entirely up to you!
Before you attempt to practice Reiki, you must understand how it works.
Reiki energy flows from your hands into your cells. Your cells will absorb this energy or life force and recharge. There isn’t much else that you have to do apart from directing this energy.
Once the life force flows through you, it will control itself and you won’t have to worry about a thing.
- Assume the position you will be most comfortable in, be it standing, sitting, or lying down. Keep in mind, Reiki is very relaxing, and if done while lying down, you could very well fall asleep!
- Use your hands to sweep over, or scan your body. Beginning with the top of your head and moving downwards, focus on transmitting your life force through your hands and into your cells. You can take as much time as you need, but follow these 9 hand positions to maximize your experience:
- The top of your head, or crown
- Your eyes
- Your ears
- Your cheeks
- Throat/ neck
- Your heart/ Chest
- Your solar plexus
- Your pelvis
- Your inner thighs, just below your groin.
These positions follow the seven chakras, another great source of life force. You will feel revitalized and fresh after practicing this.
When you are done, take a deep breath to finish off.
Ready to take it further?
You can also try visualizing the Reiki flowing out of your hands and into the rest of your body. Imagine the energy transferring from spot to spot; from your crown to your forehead to your nose, and so on. Soon you will be full of energy.
When trying the above method, it might help to visualize Reiki as light, or bright streams of color.
At each position, breathe deeply.
The energy flow might warm you up. Keep a bottle of water handy, should you feel a bit dehydrated when you are done.
Keep in mind…
Reiki is best practiced daily, but again this can be at any time or place that you choose. While it is not necessary to create a ritual out of it, it might be easier to commit if you do.
Say a prayer before or after. Meditate for a bit before you resume your day. Include it in your bedtime ritual… Anything that will motivate you to not give up.
Naturally, the more you practice, the more proficient you will become.
Healing does not have to be physical. It can be emotional or spiritual, too.
Practicing Reiki healing while following basic healthy lifestyle habits, such as eating correctly and sleeping well, will maximize the effect of Reiki. It is important that you take care of yourself. Reiki will not be able to perform miracles on you if you disrespect your body.
As mentioned above, Reiki is best used when it is done correctly. If you are unsure of your abilities or would like to learn more about Reiki, look up Reiki practitioners near you. You can even take a course or learn how to do Reiki professionally.
Lastly, Reiki is indeed a lifestyle, and practicing it daily will be so much more powerful in conjunction with its five principles. If you live well and develop self-control, you will have so much less that needs healing.
Reiki is one of the most popular spirit sciences, and now it’s no surprise why. If you need a practice that is relaxing spiritually and physically, heals, centers and clarifies, and transcends into every aspect of your life, then Reiki might just be for you.
