How To Define Intuitive? A Spectacular Guide On All Things Intuition

How to define intuitive

Many of our most groundbreaking moments in life happen when we get out of our own way.

What do we mean by that?

Our biggest breakthroughs, our best decisions, and our most accurate impulses don’t happen when we are focused on attaining them.

Rather, they happen in what seem to be bursts of magic — those “aha!” moments, those mystical moments when something unexplainable (almost God-like) seems to move through us…

These moments are flashes of intuition.

People who embrace these moments and learn to faithfully dance with them are people we not only define intuitive, but generally, incredibly successful.

In fact, some of the most successful, brilliant minds in history had their biggest breakthroughs when they weren’t even using their minds, at all.

Albert Einstein, Elon Musk, Leonardo Da Vinci, Beethoven, Nikola Tesla, Steve Jobs, Newton, Vishen Lakhiani, and many others, used their intuitive superpowers to spark their greatest successes.

The only real valuable thing is intuition.

— Albert Einstein

And what’s so thrilling here is that you don’t need an expensive education, a lonesome pilgrimage across foreign lands, nor a rare genetic code to create this kind of magic.

It’s much, much simpler than all of that.

We just need to learn how to tap into that same source of intuition they tapped into.

And you’re in the right place, because in this article we will be exploring all things intuition. From the backgrounds of these successors, to what intuition is, to what intuition isn’t, to how it can change your life (and the world), to how to tap into it like a pro.

So let’s get into it.

The Intuition Backgrounds Of 2 Profound World Changers

What is intuition?
Vishen Lakhiani, founder of Mindvalley

Steve Jobs

Intuition is a very powerful thing, more powerful than intellect, in my opinion.

— Steve Jobs

In his youth, the eager and curious Steve Jobs embarked on a 7-month long soul-searching journey to India. It was during this expedition that he discovered the art of mindfulness and the power to tap into intuition.

Intuition became the bedrock of his success — so much so that he insisted that all of his tech-minded employees be counseled in intuitive, mindful awareness.

Vishen Lakhiani

Intuition leads to global unity.

— Vishen Lakhiani

The founder of Mindvalley, Vishen Lakhiani, has completely redesigned education for the world. Like Steve Jobs, he is a revolutionary. And it wasn’t his expensive engineering degree that earned him such success.

No, Vishen attributes his success to learning how to hone his power of intuition.

Way back when meditation was weird and he felt like his life had hit a dead-end, Vishen spontaneously joined a meditation class called “Altered States of Mind to Unleash Intuition.” The class was tiny and strange back then, but is now famously known as the Silva Method.

It was with the wisdom he gained in that class that his life turned upside down and Mindvalley was born.

To learn more about how he went from (awfully) selling technology to law firms to creating a global education system that is unleashing the full potential of humanity, check out Vishen’s full intuition story.

What Is An Intuitive Person? How To Define Intuitive

Intuitive definition

Here’s the full-on, honest truth: we are all intuitive people.

We all define intuitive.

Many of us just haven’t quite learned how to harness our intuitive powers.

As we mentioned before, these world-changers didn’t possess any unique superpowers. In fact, in the cases of Steve Jobs and Vishen Lakhiani, they learned how to become intuitive.

How did they both learn to become intuitive people?

  1. They both learned what intuition was.
  2. In order to hone their inner voice of intuition, they also learned what intuition wasn’t.
  3. They looked for scientific validation to help them trust their intuition.
  4. They needed to learn why they should trust it.
  5. They needed to learn how to develop their intuitive skills further.

And guess what?

The rest of this article is a guide on exactly those things. And with it, you’ll have the tools you need to become an incredibly intuitive person.

So, up next, we will discuss what exactly intuition is.

What Is ESP? Intuition Comes In Many Forms

Knowing how to truly define intuitive can be quite difficult. The idea of intuition can be quite elusive. It comes in many forms and goes by many names.

Perhaps you have heard phrases such as:

  • A sixth sense
  • A gut feeling
  • Spidey Sense

These all fall under the concept of intuition, which is, ultimately, ESP — extrasensory perception.

What is ESP? Extrasensory literally means “outside the senses” — the 5 senses of touch, hearing, sight, taste, and smell. Hence, why it is often thought of as a “sixth sense.”

But where does this seemingly mystical sense come from?

Some scientists believe this extrasensory perception is received through the mind, alone. Yet, other sciences believe that it may come from our gut, our heart, or something even more mysterious.

Whatever this extrasensory perception is, it seems to not be bound to limits of time and space, nor take on a single form. This intuitive, sixth sense is manifested in many different ways: from manipulating physical objects, to knowing the thoughts of others, to seeing into the future.

Here are a few types of ESP:

Telepathy — The ability to know another person’s thoughts or send and receive messages via the mind.

Precognition — The ability to see into the future.

Retrocognition —  The ability to see into the past.

Psychokinesis — Also known as telekinesis, psychokinesis is the ability of one’s mind to have a direct effect on another object without the use of any physical energy. It’s like the superhero movies, just much less theatrical.

Clairvoyance — The ability to see information about an object, person, scenario, location, or event in the past, present, or future, using only extrasensory means.

Clairsentience — The ability to feel the sensations and emotions of another person, without any external stimulation.

Clairaudience — The ability to receive auditory information through sixth sensory hearing.

Clairalience — The ability to pick up on external impressions through the sense of smell.

Clairgustance — The ability to receive outside information and psychic impressions from the sense of taste.

Mediumship — Combining several different types of ESP, like clairvoyance and clairaudience, mediumship is the ability to communicate with the dead by channeling their spirits.

To dive deeper into these different types of ESP, check out our article, What Is ESP? Exploring 6 Types of Extrasensory Perception.

What Intuition Isn’t

Define intuitive

Now that we’ve dissected how to really define intuitive, it’s time to figure out what intuition isn’t.

Many times, we mistake phenomena, like our sensing ability and our innate instincts, for intuition.  If we truly want to understand intuition, we must differentiate intuition from our other impressive human abilities.

Intuitive Vs. Sensing, What’s The Difference?

Our way of understanding the world is based on how we access and perceive the information around us. And, contrary to common belief, we actually have two ways of accessing this information — via intuition and via senses.

So, what’s the difference? How can you know when you are intuiting something versus when you are sensing something?

What is sensing?

Sensing is the ability to create meaning from the information you observe through your 5 senses, consciously or unconsciously.

For instance, perhaps we think that we intuitively know when it’s about to rain. But really, we unconsciously know this because we can see certain clouds in the distance, or sense unusual temperature changes.

What is intuiting?

Intuition isn’t cognitive; nor is it even sensory.

Rather, it is a way to perceive information outside of these conscious, cognitive, and sensory processes. Intuition transcends time and space and allows us to access knowledge we don’t consciously learn or think about.

Do you ever get that gut feeling that something is just off? Or how about a seemingly random thought that ends up coming true?

These are examples of intuition.

How Do You Really Define Instinct?

How do baby turtles know to immediately crawl into the ocean?

Instincts are also referred to as fixed action patterns (FAPs) — sequences of actions that can be triggered by environmental signals to increase the chances of survival.

Fixed action patterns are hard-wired into every individual of a species.

You can define instinct as behaviours that:

  1. Are known and expressed without learning. They are innate.
  2. Are “pre-programmed” and are mostly present at birth.
  3. Are shared within the same species.
  4. Are coded and passed down genetically.
  5. Are highly adaptable across many generations, but rigid within individuals.
  6. Ultimately serve to increase our chances of survival.

Instinct vs. Intuition, What’s The Difference?

The Oxford Dictionary would define intuitive as, “To understand something instinctively.” Essentially, intuition is the ability to access knowledge or information without learning… Which sounds a lot like instinct.

So, it is understandable that we often think of the two as synonymous. But really, there is an important distinction we must make between the two.

Intuition is often expressed as a feeling or thought.

Instinct is expressed as an action (or reaction).

So, while instinct is intuitive, it is expressed quite differently than our intuition.

How Science Is Exploring The True Intuitive Meaning

intuition meaning

Intuition used to be quite underestimated, mainly of it’s because seemingly immeasurable nature. Luckily, science is beginning to turn the tables and provide us with quantitative, measurable data to truly define intuitive.

The Heartmath Institute has done some profound research on the measurement of heart waves and our ability to intuitively know the future.

But recent discoveries surely don’t stop there. Science has also discovered ways to measure how intuition is able to predict the future, as well as how intuition helps us to make the best decisions possible.

To learn more about these intriguing experiments, check out How Science Is Discovering The True Intuitive Meaning.

Here, we will share how science has been able to measure our ability to send messages via the mind (telepathy).

In the University of Edinburgh’s Parapsychology Unit, they performed an experiment to measure whether or not participants were able to “send” messages to one another, using only their minds.

So, they conducted this experiment by dividing their participants into two separate groups — one group was the “senders” and the other group was the “receivers.”

The groups were completely separated.

They were in totally different rooms. Plus, the receivers listened to white noise, wore eye-shields, and were bathed in red light. Zero sensory information was able to be transmitted to or from the senders.

The senders were shown a video. After watching the video, they were asked to send information of the video to the receivers — using only their minds.

The receivers were then shown four different videos. After watching the videos, they were asked to choose which of the four videos they believed the senders watched.

Generally, we would expect a 25% “hit” rate, right? But that’s not what happened.

The receivers actually reached a 33% “hit” rate. That’s 7% higher than average.

When the founder of Mindvalley, Vishen Lakhiani, shared this ground-breaking information, he explained,

Now, you may be thinking that 7% isn’t like a big deal. But when you put this into a real-world context, 7% can be incredibly significant. It shows that the odds of intuition being real are billions to 1 in favor of intuition.

This experiment was done with people who hadn’t learned to hone their intuitive powers. At the end of this article, we will teach you how you can learn to strengthen your intuition and greatly increase that 7%

You can learn more about these telepathic studies via the Ganzfeld Experiments.

4 Strong Reasons To “Trust Your Gut”

Trust your gut

We are told all the time to trust our gut, follow our heart, and listen to our intuition.

Yet, we seem to let our critical, analytical brain override this powerful feeling. Why? Perhaps because we’ve been taught so about how to use our brains, but so little about how to follow our true inner guide.

We tend to constantly second guess our gut feeling. So, here are some powerful reasons to trust it.

1. Your gut is like your second brain

Did you know that we technically have 3 brains? The brain between our ears, our heart, and our gut. All 3 have neurons, just like the neurons in our brain. In fact, our heart and gut send just as many signals to our brain as the other way around.

But unlike the processes of our brain, our heart and our gut are associated with intuition. Unfortunately, the intuitive feelings we get from our gut and heart are often undermined and in conflict with our conscious brain.

This intuitive part of our being is able to access databases of information your brain can’t. It is able to assess the past, present, and future simultaneously. It connects your mind, body, and spirit without you ever having to think about it.

2. It helps you to know yourself deeper

The voice of intuition is really the voice of your deepest, highest, and truest self. When it speaks, it is coming from the real you.

3. It will protect you

Do you ever get that feeling that something just isn’t right? Perhaps you are at a party and someone is giving you an inexplicably strange vibe. Randomly, you feel the urge to leave the room.

This is perhaps your intuition communicating to you.

Our intuition can assess far more information than our conscious minds can — and much, much quicker. Perhaps our intuition can sense that person’s ill intention and it is trying to guide you away from it.

4. The more you follow your intuition, the stronger it gets

Your intuition works like a muscle. The more you follow it, the louder, stronger, clearer, and more evident it will become.

To learn about these in more depth, read our article, 4 Powerful Reasons To Trust Your Gut.

How To Strengthen Your Spidey Sense Superpowers

define intuitive

And now, that moment you’ve been waiting for…

Now that you’ve learned how to really define intuitive (what it is and what it is not), how science explains this magical phenomenon, and why you should trust it, here’s how to strengthen your new-found superpowers.

For a more thorough guide, check out 7 Ways To Improve Your Spidey Sense Superpowers.

1. Spend time alone

Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

— Steve Jobs

We live in an incredibly overstimulated world. With all of this outside noise, it’s difficult to distinguish between your inner, intuitive voice, and all the other voices, sounds, and distractions happening around you.

So here’s what you can do to combat the ruckus and become reconnected with your truest self: be alone.

Truly alone — no distractions, no music, not even a book. Just you.

Let your thoughts flow and listen to your inner being. Becoming familiar with your true, inner self is a fantastic way to sharpen your intuition.

Once you know what your real voice sounds like, it will stand out from the rest.

2. Intuition inducing affirmations

Many of us are familiar with the power of daily affirmations. If this is your groove, check out these intuition affirmations to strengthen your intuition.
