In our modern social-media infused world, maintaining high esteem and a healthy self image is easier said than done.
Our sense of self is constantly bombarded. We struggle to cultivate a positive self image amidst ad campaigns designed to make us feel defective.
So, if you’ve ever studied your reflection and felt not good enough, you’re not alone.
All of us struggle with our self-image.
But feeling confident and empowered in your daily life doesn’t need to be out of reach.
Here’s what you need to know about what self image is and how you can send your self-esteem skyrocketing.
What Do You Mean By Self Image?
If there’s one thing we’ve become proficient in as a society, it’s self-criticism.
We learn this berating behavior from an early age. From parents. Teachers. Classmates.
We learn to look for faults and shortcomings. And there’s no person or thing we find more significant fault with than ourselves.
And this perpetual self-criticism pummels our self-image.
But what is self image?
Self image is the mental picture you’ve created of yourself.
But this goes much deeper than the image you see when you look in the mirror.
Self image is intrinsically tied to self esteem. When our self image fails, our self esteem flounders.
What is self image in psychology?
In the field of psychology, self-image is also referred to as self-concept.
This is a collection of perceptions you have of yourself. This collection as a whole is your self-image or self-concept.
Your self-concept is slowly formed over time and can be resistant to change.
Because your self-concept constitutes your identity. It’s not easy to change this perception you’ve cultivated of who you are as a person.
But with a little hard work and application, you can create a positive self image.
What is positive self image?
Positive self image is just what it sounds like: a positive identification with the self.
Positive self image lends itself to healthy, high self esteem.
So, if you’re looking to learn how to feel better about yourself, cultivating a positive self image is a great place to start.
8 Effective Ways To Boost Your Self Image
The most effective way to boost self-esteem is your praise yourself.
People with high self-esteem have an infectiously positive energy. They are healthier, more energetic, and more productive.
They seem to have no trouble getting what they want. As if by magic.
Well, it’s not magic. It has everything to do with the way you feel about yourself and how you value your presence.
Increasing your self-esteem raises your vibration, and gives you dominion over your life. You become disciplined and don’t hesitate to take action. You build trust in yourself as you listen to your intuition and do everything with integrity and commitment.
As a result, your self image begins to transform.
Growing your self-esteem takes discipline. It all starts with you.
1. Build momentum
Start by doing something that helps you build momentum. Momentum creates positive energy. And positive energy fuels action in other areas of your life.
So, what gets you rolling?
Start with a small success, and immediately move on to something else while your energy is high. It feels good and squelches your procrastination habit (a self-esteem killer).
2. Do something every day that scares you
It doesn’t have to be huge — it just has to be something you’ve hesitated to do in the past.
The more you practice tackling what scares you, the more confidence you’ll build.
Because the simple fact of the matter is that you are capable of so much more than you realize.
Put this into practice on a daily basis and you’ll continue to surprise yourself.
And your self-image will continue to develop as a result.
3. Do things you’re good at and love
What makes you happy?
Reinforce your positives – abilities, strengths, and talents – for a daily dose of self-esteem.
The more you develop your strengths, the greater confidence you’ll have in your ability to succeed.
4. Help others
There are few things as cathartic as helping others.
When you’re busy helping other people, you don’t have time to think about how incompetent or unworthy you are.
Because in fact, just the opposite is true.
When you take the time to invest in the wellbeing of others, you’re actually also caring for yourself. And this form of self-care is nurturing to the core.
5. Set challenging goals
Set goals in areas of your life you want to improve: wealth, health, relationships, or career.
Make a plan with clearly defined steps that break big goals down into small daily actions.
Work on boosting your confidence in any area of your life you feel is lacking. The boost in self-esteem will have a domino effect across your entire life.
Goals in any area support others!
6. Stop comparing
Easier said than done, but why seek comparisons?
If you were the only person in the world, you wouldn’t have low self-esteem because there would be no one to compare yourself to.
So, don’t worry about what other people do or think.
We tend to imagine others as being far more interested in our lives than they are. We forget that they have their own lives to deal with. They’re too busy being caught up in their own thoughts and emotions to obsess over what you wore to work last Thursday!
March to your own drummer, at your own pace, and to the best of your ability.
7. Do your best
One of the Four Agreements as set out by author don Miguel Ruiz in his book of the same name is: do your best.
He explains that when you do your best, you can no longer harbor self-criticism or hatred.
How can you place blame on yourself when you’ve already done the absolute best that you can do?
When you’ve given 100%, that’s really all there is.
But keep in mind that your 100% is going to look and feel differently on different days. 100% when you’re sick isn’t the same thing as 100% when you’re well. But either way, in both instances, you’re giving the best effort that you’re able to give.
Tell yourself: “I am doing my best, with integrity, intending to serve others. No more can be asked of me because I am already giving the best effort I can.”
