Purpose: Unlock The Power Of Your Potential

purpose

We don’t realize how insidious a hole we dig ourselves when we abandon the forward momentum of a purpose-driven life.

Purpose is what brings us the drive we need, not just to get out of bed in the morning, but to go about our day with an enthusiasm for our work.

Have you ever met someone with a powerful sense of purpose? Their exuberance for life is admirable, to say the least. And it can be intimidating, if you don’t share their passion.

So, what is my purpose? How do you find it?

How can we rediscover our purpose to lead a more conscious, passionate, enthusiastic life? Let’s explore this multifaceted topic together and see if can’t shed some light on what it means to lead a purpose-driven life.

What Does It Mean To Lead A Purpose Driven Life?

“The purpose of life is a life of purpose.” Robin Sharma

Let’s use an example to understand what a purposeful life might look like:

There are two rice farmers who wake up early every morning to tend their fields. One farmer wakes early before the light has broken through the horizon. He grumbles and grunts as he drags himself to his feet.

He puts on his old farming clothes with fumbling hands, frowning at the holes in the knees of his pants. As the day progresses, the sun beats heavily on his face. His sore and aching muscles groan.

He finishes his day’s work and hurries home, eager to rest and try to recuperate before the next day of work.

The second farmer rises to the freshness of a new day. He breathes deeply as he dresses himself, grateful for the air in his lungs and the clothes on his back. He leaves his home to embrace the picturesque sunrise.

As he works, he meditates mindfully on his actions, focusing on each task at hand with devoted energy, pleased to be able to work outdoors and in fine weather.

He returns home from his day in the fields to embrace the time he now gets to spend with his family. He goes to sleep to rest his body before the next day of work.

That second farmer sounds like he lives quite the poetic life, doesn’t he? Yet his circumstances are really no different than those of the first farmer.

The difference? Purpose.

Living a life of purpose grants you the gift of direction, focus, and drive. And purpose affords you a measure of clarity on what to say yes to, and what to say no to.

When the river bound for the ocean darts back on itself or takes the long way around, it does so knowing that the route it takes is ultimately the path of least resistance. It knows how to navigate its route to its destination.

When you are filled with purpose, even a setback can be re-framed as a learning experience. A necessary hurdle on your trajectory to your goal.

So, how do you find your purpose?

2 Ways To Find Your Purpose

Finding your purpose is a little like creating the perfect wardrobe. It requires a bit of trial and error, a lot of fine tuning, you might outgrow some things, or realize they’ve gone out of fashion.

But as time progresses, you eventually discover what works best for you.

“What would you do if money was no object?” —Alan Watts

If you did not depend on what you did for survival, and if it wasn’t a matter of chasing fortune, what would you do? What fills you with passion and joy and excitement? What gets you out of bed in the morning?

1. Discover Your True Values

Dr. John Demartini tells us that the world is a balanced place. It is only our perceptions that create imbalances in what we observe.

And what we perceive as lacking in the world is what we value most.

These values are something we will attune to naturally. We fulfill these values without any genuine effort. Once we are attuned to what they are, we can apply ourselves in these areas.

You’ll know what matters most to you by looking at the things and people you choose to surround yourself with. Our values are consistent in our thoughts, feelings, and actions. And if there is a discrepancy between our true values and what we put out into the world, we will feel the disharmony in our bodies and minds.

So, what do you value?

2. Meaning is Magic: Creating a Life of Meaningful Purpose

In his book Man’s Search For Meaning, Victor Frankl emphasizes the power of creating meaning in your life.

Meaning is not something inherent or passed down to us from our parents. Meaning is something we need to create for ourselves.

Everyone perceives the world in different ways. While one individual may observe the painted colors of a sunset without much enthusiasm, for the person standing right next to him or her, it just might be one of the most glorious sunsets they’ve ever witnessed.

You create the meaning in your life. If you want your life to be meaningful, tune into your values, listen to your heart’s passions, and seek that which makes you feel whole.
