Luckily, finding out what you want to do with your life isn’t as daunting as it may seem.

How To Figure Out What To Do With Your Life

There’s no magic formula for finding your path. But hey, this is what makes life interesting! Finding your true purpose takes a lot of exploration; of both yourself and the world around you.

When asking, “What do I want to do with my life?”, you need to focus all your attention on the “I want” part.

Many people will tell you what you should do in your life. But the first step towards finding your path is breaking away from the influence of others and focusing your attention inward.

Everyone has something they’re passionate about. You might not yet know what it is, but it’s there. You just need to look close enough.

To do this, considering adopting a child’s mindset. You need to be uninhibited and willing to explore the world around you. Your purpose will emerge, but you must be willing to find it.

Life is all about experiences. We’re given a finite amount of time on this planet, and everything we do matters. We only get one shot at this and every moment counts.

Realizing this can be very powerful and liberating. If you’re wondering how to get a life that really matters, use the time you have to get out there and explore as much as you can.

Focus your energy on the people around you, creating opportunities for growth and do what makes your heart sing.

Each one of us excels at something. But it’s not always easy to identify what this is. 

If you’ve ever asked yourself: what am I good at? you’ll need to spend some time alone and really analyze your passions, aspirations, and dreams.

You’ll know that you’re good at something if:

  • You don’t struggle to do it; it feels like second nature
  • You don’t have to put a lot of effort into advancing your skills
  • You receive consistent appreciation or recognition for your work

These are just a few ways for you to figure out what you’re good at. Once you uncover what you’re good at, you can use this knowledge to further develop your talents.

Be true to yourself

This phrase is so overused that it’s become something of a cliché. But it’s popular for a good reason. There really are very few things in life as important as being true to yourself.

You’re the only person you’ll spend your whole life with. Lying to yourself can cause you to lose touch with yourself. And when we’re a stranger to ourselves, this is a recipe for disaster.

Note that acceptance shouldn’t be passive. Many people misinterpret being true to themselves as nothing more than saying: “This is just the way I am.”

This kind of fixed mindset will get you nowhere.

Instead, you should note the difference between the things you can and can’t change. Accept what you can’t change, and work on improving what you know can be better.

But to successfully do this, you need to work on one crucial thing.

Gaining self-knowledge

Self-knowledge is the essence of living a fulfilled life. If you don’t know who you are, you’ll never know who you want to be.

Getting to know yourself is often harder than getting to know others. It takes time and effort, and it’s pretty much always a work in progress.

However, it’s one of the best investments of your time and energy.

Here are some of the questions you can ask yourself right now to expand your self-knowledge:

  • How do I feel about my life?
  • Why do I feel this way?
  • What’s the best/worst thing about my current life situation?
  • Are there areas of my personality are valuable to others?
  • What do I need to work on?
  • What do I want to do at this very moment?
  • Is there anything stopping me from fulfilling my aspirations?

This is where honesty is essential. It’s even more helpful to write the questions and answers down. Keep in mind that the answers will change with time, but this is simply a sign that you’re evolving.

Everybody needs a confidence boost every once in a while. What’s important is that you don’t seek sources of empowerment outside of yourself. Doing this will result in a lack of self-confidence since your life will revolve around external approval.

What you should do instead is work on your self-talk. Our thoughts are what ultimately decide what our life is like, and they’re often more important than our actual circumstances.

By practicing positive self-talk, you’ll discover that there are many things you actually love about yourself; they’re just tucked away.

The key to lasting self-empowerment is in finding what you love and appreciate about yourself the most.

Finding the ideal you

Knowing who you are is just the first step towards creating the life you want. But the discovery of the ideal you is what can ultimately change the course of your life.

This is the foundation on which you’ll build your personal and professional achievements. And it needs to be stable enough to withstand all the life stressors and events you’ll undergo as you age.

Start exploring the ways in which you can become the best version of yourself. It all boils down to playing to your strengths and working on your shortcomings.

Keep in mind that this isn’t something that just happens. It’s a continuous effort that you have to put in if you want to truly reach your full potential.

So, who are you?

To find out who you really are, remove your social masks and come back to yourself.

You’ll likely see that there are many things to explore, which is exactly how your journey to a self-fulfilled life begins.
