The primary reason why we gain weight and develop other health problems is that we become less active as we age.
We’ve been taught to settle for the idea that it’s normal to put on a few kilos every year. That it’s normal for us to lose our mobility, or lose our strength over time.
We’ve believed that our health decline was inevitable — but it’s not.
In fact, each year our metabolism will only burn 7 fewer calories than the year before.
It’s been shown that a person who is active throughout their day might burn 700 more calories than someone who’s sitting all day. In reality, it’s not that our metabolism slows; it’s that our daily habits change. Most of us become more and more sedentary with age.
And on top of that, studies done by the National Institutes of Health have shown that we seem to become less perceptive of our own nutritional needs as we age.
You would think that we’d understand the needs of our bodies better as we age, but it turns out that society has trained us to have an unhealthy relationship with food.
How our relationship with food changes
We learn that food is punishment, reward, a way to socialize or take a break, and so we end up eating more (and more unhealthily) than we bargained for.
Our natural appetite mechanisms — the ones that tell us if we’re hungry or if we’ve had enough — dull. We replace them with time and environmental cues.
On the face of it, this might be a hard truth to swallow. But this is actually great news.
Why? Because now we know that power is squarely in our hands.
You can actually lose weight, gain muscle, increase strength and energy, improve your health problems, and increase your metabolism as you age.
You can keep and revive the vitality you had in your youth. All of this is possible. It simply requires the knowledge, the intention, and, most importantly, the action.
