Who are Gayatri and Savitr?
Gayatri is all scriptures, and the Gayatri Mantra personified. Because of the power and popularity of the Gayatri Manta, she is now known as a goddess and is said to be present when and wherever her name is chanted.
She passes good thoughts on to those who worship her. She is depicted as having five faces and is also believed to embody all Goddesses.
Savitr, the Sun God, has golden eyes, and broad golden arms. He has yellow hair and rides a radiant horse-drawn carriage.
He is said to be the light of the universe.
He is the protector of all beings. He gives immortality to the gods, and life to mankind.
The Benefits of the Gayatri Mantra
The Gayatri Mantra has many purposes, and therefore, many benefits. The most common are:
1) Uniting the physical, spiritual and psychological for inner peace and serenity
2) Cleansing the mind, body, and soul of negativity.

4) Illumination, or in other words, wisdom.

There are many translations for this chant, but it is accepted as meaning:
Let us meditate on that excellent glory of the divine vivifying Sun, May he enlighten our understandings.
How and When to Chant the Gayatri Mantra
Since the Gayatri Mantra is one of cleansing it is important to cleanse yourself before or as you say it.
It is recommended to say the Gayatri Mantra at least three times a day; in the morning, the afternoon and the evening/ before you go to bed. There is no limit to the number of times you can say the Gayatri Mantra, as long as you are consistent in your chanting.
When saying the Gayatri Mantra it is important to focus on what Gayatri and Savitr stand for, as well as the blessings you would like to receive from them.
For this reason, it is best to meditate in a quiet area, when you have time for yourself and will not be interrupted in your chanting.
