Achieving Your Way To A Great Life

by Mindvalley April 22, 2019

Achievement is a word that gets thrown around a lot these days. We’re under a lot of pressure to succeed and achieve. But do we ever stop to consider what it actually means to be successful?

What does achieving actually mean?

People use different standards to measure their achievement. For some, it’s acquiring wealth. Others may want a stable and healthy family life. Others strive for excellence in their career.

In any event, the achievement isn’t a means to an end but a demanding journey full of challenges.

Here’s how to overcome the life challenges that stand between you and your personal success.

Taking Personal Responsibility

You have the freedom to operate the way you want, but you must take responsibility for the choices you make and the actions you take.

-Jon Butcher, Author of Mindvalley’s Lifebook Quest

Personal responsibility and accountability may not sound so glamorous at first. But consider this: if you lack self-discipline, your life can become trapped in a continuous repetition of thoughtless patterns.

So, how can we be more responsible and take charge of our lives?

Start with these 3 tips for taking on more personal responsibility:

  1. Don’t blame others for what you’re responsible for.
  2. Identify your mechanisms (conscious or unconscious) for avoiding responsibility.
  3. Be willing to admit to making mistakes.

What is meant by “Achieve”?

The Cambridge Dictionary defines achievement as the completion of a very good and difficult thing. Broad as it is, this applies to all aspects of your life, regardless of your goals.

It doesn’t matter if you’re after career success or setting a goal to redecorate your house. Achieving means accomplishing something that you’re proud to share with others.

Creating A Life Plan

Without a clear plan, your life will move in whichever direction the wind blows. This “go with the flow” approach may work for some, but it may not always lead in the direction you were hoping to go.

The solution? Create a life plan.

Making a life plan can be a fun and enjoyable experience. Fast forward to the end of your life and think about the accomplishments you’d be proud to share with others.

Next, create a list of your main priorities and consider how they can best be added to your life plan.

The trick to a successful life plan is in keeping it loose, flexible, and open to interpretation. Because the truth is, our priorities change with time. Be willing to make changes to your life plan as things unfold and circumstances change.  life plan

Goals Vs Objectives

Goals and objectives are an integral part of your life plan. They are what will help you guide and structure your plan to your individual needs.

Is there a difference between goals vs objectives? Yes. And understanding their differences is an important first step.

Objectives represent the strategies and actions you use to achieve your goals. They are measurable and specific, and help set a time frame for your goals. If you struggle to define your objectives, try to answer the simple questions of what, where, how, and who to get a clearer picture.

Unlike objectives, goals are often not as quantifiable or specific. You can set them for the short term or the long term as the primary ideas of what you want to achieve.

Your personal goals outline the vision and direction of your success, while your objective structure your approach.

Create a goal book

A goal book is a book you use to record your goals. This might sound like a clichéd exercise, but don’t underestimate its importance.

Armed with your newfound knowledge about personal responsibility, goals, and objectives, grab a notebook and start putting everything down on paper. This is how you can generate a visual representation of your life plan.

Dedicate special sections to long- and short-term goals and don’t forget to outline your objectives.

Goal Setting Template

To be perfectly honest, setting goals is not as easy as it seems. It involves copious planning, analysis, and thinking a few steps ahead in anticipation of potential problems.

One way to stay ahead of the curve is to give your goals structure. Of course, a goal book is a great place to start, but sometimes you need a little more structure and organization in your life.

Like all templates, you have choices here, many of which you can download for free. If they’re too generic, you can always customize them. Explore different goal setting templates online and see what you can dig up.

A good goal setting template should feature the following:

  • simple and straightforward
  • sections for both short- and long-term goals
  • methods for measuring results
  • organized actions you need to take to achieve your goals

Create a goal chart

Similar to a goal setting template, a goal chart helps you keep track of all your goals. And creating a goal chart can be a really entertaining experience. There are plenty of ways to have fun with it and exercise your creativity.

The simplest way to create a goal chart is to purchase a poster board that you can put up at home or in the office. Use different colors to label your main goals and sub-goals. Make sure to update the chart each time you reach an important milestone.

Post-it notes of all shapes and sizes can make the chart more appealing. Try using large post-it notes for your major goals and smaller ones for the sub-goals. Colored pens, highlighters, and stickers can all help turn your goal chart into a piece of art that makes you smile each time you see it.

What Is The SMART Goal Template?

SMART goal templates have been in used since the 80s. Primarily used in business settings, they can also be an effective way to organize personal goals.

The acronym SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

Narrowing down your goals might be somewhat of a challenge at first. But once you apply the SMART goal template principle, things will begin to clear up and you’ll be well on your way to achieving your aspirations.

How do you achieve your goals?

The journey starts by accepting full responsibility for your actions. Don’t be intimidated, as responsibility simply means using a more realistic approach to your achieve your goals.

Your life plan is the next step. Find a nice notebook and pick out a favorite goal template and start laying the foundation for your desired life.

The final takeaway

It’s hard to achieve anything without a clear strategy. Creating your life plan gives you an outline for your future. But the plan doesn’t achieve itself.

You’d need to set your mind in the right direction and be ready to adapt and change. Always think about the bigger picture for that extra push of motivation.

Gain Instant Clarity On What You Really Want In Life – And Have It All

There’s a reason that so many brilliantly talented, naturally creative, intelligent and capable people never reach their potential, and it is, quite simply, a lack of direction.

Even if you have a vague goal in mind, you still need a plan, a process to get you there.

You can have the most expensive, fastest car in the world, but if you set off without a clear idea of where you’re going, then the rusty old Beatle with a map and compass will beat you there every time.
